FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for dock electrical work?
Yes. Any new electrical installation on a dock requires a permit and inspection in New York State. We handle the permit application and coordinate the final inspection so you don’t have to.
What is electric shock drowning and how do you prevent it?
Electric shock drowning occurs when AC current leaks into the water near a dock, creating a voltage gradient that can paralyze or kill swimmers. GFCI breakers and proper grounding, installed by a licensed marine electrician, prevent this entirely.
Can you add power to an existing dock?
Yes. We assess the existing panel capacity, run a sub-feed to the dock if needed, and add properly rated outlets, GFCI protection, and fixtures. Most existing docks can be upgraded without replacing the main service.
What types of loads can dock power support?
Boat lift motors, bilge pump controls, lighting, 30A and 50A shore power pedestals for boats, audio systems, and outdoor receptacles for tools and appliances. We size the system to your current and anticipated load.
How long does installation take?
A standard residential dock power installation takes one to two days. Larger commercial projects or those requiring significant panel upgrades may take longer. We provide a timeline with your quote.
